Various factors work to regulate the water balance. The intake of water by inducing thirst is a mechanism by which the body intakes water. Thirst is induced by osmoreceptors that sense the water levels or body osmolarity. Osmoreceptors are present in the hypothalamus region. Kidneys have special protein receptors that sense low blood volume. It activates the renin-angiotensin mechanism of kidneys. It activates the reabsorption mechanism of water from the fluid filtered by the kidneys, to bring the water levels back to normal. In these cases, concentrated urine is produced. Aldosterone is another hormone working similarly to maintain water balance.

Adrenal gland release aldosterone when the concentration of sodium is low and the concentration of potassium is high. The release of aldosterone is also stimulated by angiotensin. Aldosterone increases the reabsorption of sodium in kidneys. Along with sodium water is also absorbed and potassium is released into the filtered fluid flowing in the kidneys. The level of water is restored to normal. When the blood volume is high, aldosterone is not released and no reabsorption of water occurs. The urine in those cases is less concentrated and extra water is removed from the body. All the factors that regulate the water balance in the body are interrelated. The activation of one can induce others. They work in both the cases, when the level of water is high in the fluids and when the level of water is low making fluids concentrated. Any fault in these mechanisms can disturb the body’s water balance.

Does that help?
