There are three stages of prenatal development. The germinal period starts at conception and goes through the first two weeks of life. During this time, the fertilized egg divides rapidly and attaches to the mother. Weeks two through eight are the embryonic period, during which all of the basic structures and systems are formed. The fetal period lasts from 9 to 38 weeks. During this time, the fetus grows in size and begins to show signs of awareness. Teratogens are environmental toxins that impact development. Teratogens have their minimal effect during the germinal stage. The greatest impact of teratogens is observed during the embryonic stage. Damage may occur to major organs and body systems.
