A client calls the chemotherapy clinic and says, "My back is hurting so much this morning, I don't know if I can ride in the car to my treatment." How should the nurse respond?
1. "It will be fine if you wait until tomorrow to come in for your treatment."
2. "I'm going to discuss your pain with your provider and I will call you back shortly."
3. "You get some rest today and I will call to check on you tomorrow."
4. "Do you have enough pain medication or should we call your pharmacy?"

The answer is 2
Rationale:
1. Back pain can indicate a serious complication. Waiting until tomorrow for treatment is not indicated.
2. Onset of severe back pain may indicate spinal compression is occurring. It is very likely that this client's pain will require further investigation and treatment.
3. The client's pain should be further investigated.
4. Treating pain without further assessment is not indicated.
