The phrase comes from the final passage of the book. When Paul's killed, we receive two brief paragraphs detailing his fate. They are: He fell in October, 1918, on a day that was so quiet and still on the whole front, that the army report confined itself to the single sentence: all quiet on the Western Front.

The German side of the war, its perspective and its actions.

On German lines north border fighting French forces.

They lie and manipulate him into doing hat they want him to do and not that of what he would do or want to do for himself and his country.

Machine guns and toxic warfare and trench warfare.

He has killed the people and seen the damage people so lightly throw around and he had seen what these people haven't and the actions of war and the consequences. He has killed and that has changed him forever.

I would say the soldiers are the heroes; they protect their country against the threat of invaders. On the contrary, soldiers like Paul were led to believe that their cause was righteous.  They didn’t have the perspective of history that we do.  They fought and died for their country not knowing that they were the villains in the story.

Yes for it can cause corruption but if you are corrupted by a book it's your choice to believe or disbelieve the words and actions written.
