In this specific scenario, the paramecium would prefer to live in a solution whose percentage of salt inside equals that amount outside so that it lives in a state of homeostasis. If the salt concentration outside exceeds that inside (hypertonic solution), it will lose water, thus shrinking its volume. If the concentration of salt outside is less than inside (hypotonic solution), water will tend to diffuse into the cell, causing it to increase in volume. Thus, the paramecium must always seek an isotonic solution.
