Are there long term negative effects to wearing compression socks? I know they squeeze the leg to increase circulation, but could they be doing too good a job? Possibly making the body less able to maintain circulation in the legs without the socks? Less adaptive?

Could it be like how viagra can actually cause erectile dysfunction in the long run? Over stretching the circulatory system?

To me, wearing compression socks is torture. It makes your legs impossible to itch, they're tight, prevent mobility -- all in all they are annoying. Compression socks should only be used to avoid circulatory complications to those that are prone to them, for example you have a family history of varicose veins. Otherwise, there's really no advantage to keeping them on.

Over using Viagra is not good for the heart as it dilates blood vessels through the production of nitric oxide. Like many drugs, we build a tolerance towards the stimulating effects of the chemical. However, I don't see how wearing compression socks would have the same lasting effect.

I don't know anyone over 35 that doesn't have some varicose veins. Even if they don't hurt one should do something to prevent a need for surgery.

I think you're probably mistaking spider veins with varicose veins. I know they're similar in the sense that they deal with faulty veins, but they're not the same morphologically. Thus, when you say everyone over 35 has them, it's definitely not true -- perhaps a spider vein here or there, those generally come due to stressful situations and resolve themselves after the stressor is gone. I personally have no varicose veins, and no prominent spider veins either. I can say the same about my mother and father too.
