The evidence of evolution is summarized in the table below.

The fossil record chronicles a progression of life forms, with transitional fossils bridging the gap between species. Natural selection, the core evolutionary mechanism, explains how heritable traits that enhance survival and reproduction become more common over generations. Imagine a population of birds - those with better beaks will be able to break larger seeds than those with smaller beaks. If one season causes trees to produce bigger seeds, only those with larger beaks will have a competitive advantage to survive and reproduce, leading those with smaller beaks to suffer.

Evolution can be categorized by its scale. Microevolution describes small-scale changes within a population, like the camouflaged beetles. Macroevolution, on the other hand, refers to the emergence of entirely new species through the accumulation of microevolutionary changes over vast stretches of time. The diversity of birds, from hummingbirds to ostriches, exemplifies this.

Convergent and divergent evolution showcase the intricate mechanisms of evolution. Convergent evolution describes how unrelated species in similar environments develop similar traits, like the streamlined bodies of dolphins and sharks. Conversely, divergent evolution describes a single species diversifying into distinct species over time, such as Darwin's finches with their beaks adapted to specific food sources.
