What did Johannes Müller propose in his doctrine of specific energies?  What riddles of sensation does his doctrine fail to explain?

Müller proposed that different sensory modalities exist because signals received by the sense organs stimulate different nerve pathways leading to different areas of the brain.
The doctrine of specific nerve energies cannot explain synesthesia.
It also fails to explain variations of experience within a particular sense, for example, pink vs. red.
