Phenylketonuria (PKU) is a condition of newborns caused by an autosomal recessive allele. The incidence of PKU is one in 160 000 births in China, one in 2600 births in Turkey, and one in 119 000 births in Japan. The frequency of carriers in Turkey is
a. 3.8%

b. 0.58%

c. 5.3%

d. 0.49%

There are 0.000384 people in Turkey that have this problem. So, of the 2600 people, 0.0384% have the condition and are, let's say rr is their genotype.

The question is asked for carriers though, so people who are Rr, one dominant gene and one defected.

So, you have to use the hardy-Weinberg equation.

p^2 + 2pq + q^2 = 1

q^2 = 0.000384

q = SQRT(0.000384)

q = 0.01959

Use: p + q = 1

p = 1 - 0.01959 = 0.9804

Now, use the equation again:

2(p)(q) = 2(0.9804)(0.01959) = 0.03841

Then you multiple that by 100 to get 3.8%

Hopefully (a) is the answer.
