How are proteins sorted into their appropriate cell compartments in eukaryotes?

Proteins with specific "signal" sequences (a hydrophobic amino terminal extension) are directed to the ER during translation, while proteins without signal sequences remain in the cytoplasm. Inside the space of the ER, the signal sequence is removed from the polypeptide. The protein is modified further by addition of specific carbohydrate groups that direct them to their final destination.
