Narrow sense heritability refers to the proportion of total phenotypic variation that can be attributed to the additive effects of genes, whereas broad sense heritability is the proportion of total phenotypic variation caused by all genetic effects. However, narrow sense heritability is the only component of variation that natural selection can act on and, thus, provides more accurate selection information.
