The currents flowing in the metal produce heating. (The Joule effect)

A well known school demonstration of this has the ring with a groove in it. The groove is filled with water, which is rapidly brought to the boil.

a ferrous metal that has it's molecules lined up in the same direction is magnetized.... with the alternating current you cause those molecules to switch the north and south poles of the magnetic field like 60 times a second for a 60hertz ac charge... the constant alternating and rotating of the molecules causes the metal to heat up from friction.... eddy currents
