A lot of jobs/internships specify an engineering degree (mechanical engineering or whatever). Is it worth applying when I am currently studying for a degree in physics?

You can try.  But there are a lot of physics internships out there too, and many of them can involve building things if that's what you're interested in.  Try talking to your professors.  You can also apply for REU (research experience for undergraduates) programs, but most of those applications are due in February.

You won't have a problem as long as your grades are good.  It would definitely help your chances, though, of getting an engineering internship if you actually had some engineering classes under your belt.
