1. Avoid casual sexual partners.
2. Use latex condoms consistently and correctly.
3. Postpone sexual involvement until you are assured that your partner is not infected.
4. Avoid injury to body tissue during sexual activity.
5. Avoid unprotected oral, anal, or vaginal sexual activity in which semen, blood, or vaginal secretions could penetrate mucous membranes or enter through breaks in the skin.
6. Always use a condom or dental dam during vaginal, oral, or anal sex.
7. Avoid using drugs and alcohol, which can dull your senses and affect your ability to take responsible precautions with potential sex partners.
8. Wash your hands before and after sexual encounters. Urinate after sexual relations and, if possible, wash your genitals.
9. Think about situations ahead of time to avoid risky behaviors, including settings with alcohol and drug use.
10. If you are worried about your own HIV or STI status, have yourself tested. Don't risk infecting others.
