Imagine that you have a friend moving to a new area on the North American continent where there is a subduction zone offshore. What sorts of volcanoes would be most likely in this setting? Which volcanic hazards should you warn your friend to be alert for?

 This is the setting for a continental volcanic arc. The volcanoes are most likely to be composite volcanoes, with andesitic compositions that are typically very explosive. Pyroclastic flows, ash falls, and lahars would be at the top of the risk list, though lava flows may also occur.
