True and False...

1. The inappropriate use of antibiotics, while a problem in third-world countries, is not a significant cause of antibiotic resistance in the US.

2. Gram-negative bacteria are generally more resistant to antibiotics because their cell wall structure prevents absorption of the antibiotic.

3. An important mechanism of resistance against penicillin is production of penicillinase, which attacks the alpha-lactam ring in the penicillin molecule

4. During the past decade, MRSA has become less of a problem in hospitals and in the community due to a decline in the number of cases.

5. MRSA refers to a type of S. aureus that is resistant to many antibiotics including methicillin.

6. Acyclovir is an important antibiotic for viral infections because it interferes with synthesis of viral DNA and RNA.

F ... You can argue this because actually the cell wall is really small; rather, it's the outer layer that prevents absorption. Maybe it's just the wording? Ask your teacher for clarification though!

F... Only DNA. Once the acyclovir is incorporated, any further growth of viral DNA is terminated.
