V = ?(200^2 + 150^2)

of airplane going one direction but carried away by wind.
HOW do I solve this equation? What does ^ mean? I can't even find it on my calculator.

sorry but what you have ehre is a little bit hazy, can you post the whole question also that little symbol is the carrot symbol here it sets both 200 and 150 to the second power

Try this:

V = Sqrt[(200*200) + (150*150)] where Sqrt means the square root of [...]

the ^ means raised to the power of, x^2 means x squared, x^3 means x cubed, etc

the resultant vector velocity is
sqrt[(200^2 +150^20] = sqrt of ( 40000 + 22500)
this will give you resultant velocity
to get the direction, because as you can recall, vector quantities not only have magnitude but also directions,
you take tan inverse of ( 150/200) assuming 150 is vertical component of velocity and 200 is horizontal component of velocity
the angle that you will get, will give you the direction of resultant velocity wrt to horizontal axis
I don't feel like riding until everything blurs.

What does ^ mean?

It means to the power of a certain number.

On a TI 83 calc you have a ^ button, just make sure you put it in para's ()
