Pepsin is a type of protease, an enzyme responsible for the digestion of proteins in the food you eat. Pepsin is secreted and used in your stomach where it begins the breakdown of proteins in the highly acidic conditions (optimum pH of pepsin is pH 2).

Pepsin is a protein digesting enzyme secreted by the walls of the stomach. If its amount is reduced that will make the digestion of proteins more difficult, the body will have to rely more on the protein digesting enzymes produced by the pancreas (mainly trypsin and trypsinogen) and secreted into the small intestine to digest them. It will then be difficult for all proteins to get fully digested.
