1 - Killed viruses - Polio is a viral infection
2 - Each B cell is genetically programmed to encode a surface receptor for a particular antigen.  Having recognized the antigen B cells multiply and transform into plasma cells which make specific antibody for that antigen.
3 - Antibodies are proteins in their quaternary structure.  Most antibodies contain four polypeptide chains.
4 - Interferons are produced by immune system cells infected with viruses.
5 - The Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC) is a group of genes that control the type of antigens in an individual
6 - Phagocytes are nonspecific in their action.  They can engulf a wide variety of microbes.
7  - IgM - Occurs as pentamers (five units) and is the first antibody class to be secreted by plasma cells after an initial exposure to any antigen.  Activates complement and causes agglutination and lysis of microbes.  Also present as monomers on the surfaces of B cells where they serve as antigen receptors.

Hope this helps Slight Smile

1) A -- First of all, you have to know that polio is a virus. Since answer choice A is the only choice that has to do with viruses, that is the only valid choice. The body produces antibodies against killed/heat-treated viruses (weakened state). The weakened viruses allow the immune system to produce memory cells that will allow for a quicker response to that same virus in the future.

2) B-- When B cells encounter antigens that bind to their antibodies, the B cells proliferate and produce two daughter B cells.

3) D-- The definition of a quaternary protein is a protein that consists of more than one polypeptide chain working together to fit its specific function. Antibodies consist of four polypeptide chains all joined together forming a "Y" shaped molecule.

4) C-- Cells infected with viruses produce interferon, which slows down the spread and creation of the virus within the cell.

5) D-- The MHC (major histocompatibility complex) is a gene that controls the production of glycoproteins found on the cell membrane on all cells. The MHC is the mechanism by which the immune system of the body differentiates and determines self and nonself cells. It allows the immune system to identify foreign things in the body so that they can be eliminated.

6) B-- Phagocytes are nonspecific because they engulf any foreign substances in the body.

7) D-- Immunoglobin IgM signals the "readiness" of B cells. IgM initiates the destruction (lysis) of foreign substances such as viruses and bacteria.
