Here is some extra information:

Step 1: Signal Protein
Step 2: Receptor in cell surface membrane
Step 3: A messenger molecule moves from the cell membrane into the nucleus
Step 4: Messenger RNA is made and released from the nucleus.

What is the mechanism by which a signal protein causes the synthesis of mRNA?

Thanks;
Dan

Watch this video: it will give you an overview.  If that's not enough information, you can always use the key terms mentioned in it to find more info.

NOTE:  The cell-surface receptor is not labeled in the video.  For most growth factors, the receptors are RTKs (receptor tyrosine kinases).

PS:  Here's a more advanced video, on quroum sensing, that also could be used (except that it's a bacterium, so mRNA does not leave the nucleus, because there isn't one).
