In my textbook only round bottom flasks are used for distillation. Why is used and not any other flask? Is there any theory behind it?

A round-bottom flask gives a more even distribution of heat, which is desirable for a distillation. Also, most standard distillation setups are assembled using ground-glass joints, which are common on round-bottom flasks.

You can buy other types of flasks with ground-glass joints, but RBFs are by far the most common.
