The latent period is the time between the arrival of an action potential at a muscle fiber and the beginning of muscle contraction. During this period, there is a rapid change in membrane potential as sodium ions enter the muscle fiber and potassium ions leave. This change in membrane potential is called the action potential. The action potential triggers the release of calcium ions from the sarcoplasmic reticulum, which then bind to troponin and initiate muscle contraction.
