Why are symmetrical structures better in earthquake events? What happens to structures that are unsymmetrical?

Symmetrical structures are better in earthquakes because the building moves evenly as one. Buildings where the structure is unsymmetrical develop torsions and shears in the floor slab during earthquakes which can cause the collapse of the floor slab.
