A zygote is a newly fertilized egg.  Fertilization leads to the zygote.  It is diploid.

Two haploid cells, a sperm from a male, and an ovum from a female merge through the process of fertilization into a single diploid cell called a zygote. The human zygote than undergoes mitotic cell division to become the more complex embryo.

Haploid cells contain 1/2 the genetic content (chromosomes) of the original cell. When the two merge the full complement of chromosomes are restored in the single diploid cell or zygote.
