Why does a typical fish die quickly when it is not in water?

A.  Gills cannot exchange gases in air, only in water.
B.  Gills split water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen, used for aerobic cellular respiration.
C.  Water contains more oxygen, per unit volume, than does air.
D.  The gills collapse and dry out in the air.
