Hydrostatic pressure is basically the pressure of a pump on a filter or membrane.

In the kidney, hydrostatic pressure essentially moves molecules that are fairly small from the blood in the arteriole of the glomerulus into the capsule that leads to the proximal tubule.  Later water is reabsorbed using concentration gradients from the convoluted tubules back into the bloodstream, concentrating excretable salts into what will become urine.
