The photoreceptor density is highest at the fovea, and light reaches these photoreceptors directly because they are not blocked by other layers of cells as they are in the rest of the retina. Furthermore, each ganglion cell receives input from only a few photoreceptors in the fovea, compared to a larger number of inputs elsewhere in the retina.
