For example, when carbon mixes with oxygen to form carbon dioxide, why is this an oxidation reduction?  Where is the change in oxidation numbers in a covalent bond?  Also, if a reaction includes oxygen, is it safe to say it is an oxidation reduction, even if it forms a covalent bond?
