These myths blame poverty on poor people, consistent with the value of individualism, which assumes that people are entirely responsible for their own success or failure. They are also consistent with the value of racism, which assumes that some groups of people are inferior. The poverty of Africans and Latinos is thus explained by their assumed inferiority.
