The sociological perspectives include a breakdown of how prejudice and discrimination follow the functionalist, conflict, and symbolic interactionist perspective. Prejudice and discrimination can be functional for society. They can build social solidarity, group loyalty, and make it possible to carry out difficult responsibilities (such as fighting an enemy). Conflict theory explains prejudice and discrimination as means by which those in the privileged class maintain their power and wealth. They do so by creating reserve labor forces and split labor markets that take advantage of the least powerful members of society (minorities). In symbolic interactionism, labels or derogatory names can act as self-fulfilling prophecies that justify prejudice and discrimination.
