The growing offspring is generally referred to as the conceptus and develops during the gestation period of pregnancy, which extends from the mother's last menstrual period until birth, which is approximately 280 days, or 40 weeks. The gestation period is longer than the prenatal period because it includes the 2 weeks after the mother's last menstrual cycle–a date that women can usually recall. The prenatal period is what people usually refer to as pregnancy and includes the approximately 38 weeks of development inside the mother's womb.
