According to Durkheim, religion was a primary mean by which society suppressed individual egoism in order to promote social order and harmony. How is this statement true and how those it make sense because i dont really understand what he is saying

Think about it, what does religion teach us to do? Humble ourselves, live pure lives, restrain our animal nature.

Without it, we would have no reason not to be egomaniacs, to do what we wanted, and have no restraints.
