Use the elimination method when solving the translated system. A regulation racquetball court as a perimeter of 120 ft, with a length that is twice the width. Find the length and the width of such a court.

Deep Thought Granola is 25% nuts and dried fruit. Oat Dream Granola is 10% nuts and dried fruit. How much of Deep Thought and how much of Oat Dream should be mixed to form a 20-lb batch of granola that is 19% nuts and dried fruit?

Let x = width
Let y = length
Then 2x + 2y = 120
You also know that 2x = y or 2x - y = 0

2x + 2y = 120
-2x + y = 0 (multiply eq. 2 by -1)
3y = 120 (add both equations together)
y = 40 ft (divide by 3)

Since 2x = y; 2x = 40 and x = 20 ft.

Perimeter of rectangle, P = 2(L+W)

so 2(L+W) = 120

divide by 2

L+W = 60

since L = 2W

2W + W = 60

3W = 60

W = 20 ft

L = 2*20 = 40 ft

2)

let x lb of Deep thought and y lb of Oat dream are needed to make 19% 20 lb granola

so x + y = 20 lb

x = 20 - y

x*(25/100) + y*(10/100) = 20*(19/100)

25x + 10y = 380

substitute x = 20 - y

25(20 - y) + 10y = 380

500 - 25y + 10y = 380

15y = 120

y = 120/15 = 8 lb

x = 20 - 8 = 12 lb
