Calcium enters the cell through voltage-gated calcium channels in the cell membrane. Calcium ions then open ryanodine receptor channels in the sarcoplasmic reticulum, resulting in calcium-induced calcium release. Calcium ions are transported back into the SR by a calcium ATPase, or removed from the cell by a sodium-calcium antiport protein.
