This is what I got for the following mastering biology problem:   

The diagram below illustrates the life cycle of Dictyostelium, a cellular slime mold. Label the diagram to indicate the processes that are occurring as well as whether each cell type is haploid or diploid.



A= amoebas emerge from large capsule
B= amoebas (n)
C= cells aggregate when food is scarce
D= two amoebas fuse to form a zygote
E= amoebas (n)
F= zygote (2n)
G= aggregate migrates
H= amoebas (n)
I= fruiting body releases spores
J= spores (n)
K= one amoeba emerges from each spore
L= amoebas (n)

My question is, what causes the two amoebas to fuse, forming a zygote? The answer just says two amoebas "may" fuse, so does it just happen by chance?
