Elisa got a paycheck from her part-time job. She spent some getting dinner, some on a movie, and some on clothes. She deposited the rest in her savings account. The total amount she spent was $148. The amount she saved was 20% more than the amount she spent on dinner and a movie. The amount she spent on shopping was $16 more than the amount she saved. What was the total amount of her paycheck?

Let paycheck be the amount of Elisa's paycheck.

dinner + movie + clothes = 148

paycheck - 148 = savings

"twenty percent more" means a multiplier of 1.2

savings = 1.2(dinner + movie)

clothes = savings + 16

Substitute for clothes in the first equation.

diner + movie + savings + 16 = 148

Substitute for dinner + movie in the first equation.

savings/1.2 + savings + 16 = 148

Simplify.

savings/(12/10) + savings + 16 = 148

savings (10/12) + savings + 16 = 148

savings(22/12) + 16 = 148

savings(22/12) = 132

savings = 132(12/22)

savings = 72

Now solve for paycheck

paycheck - 148 = savings

paycheck - 148 = 72

paycheck = 220
