The hoop stress, Qh, at the outer surface of a pipe with internal pressure, P, outside diameter d1, and inside diameter d2 is

Qh=(2Pd22)/(d12-d22)

A well-made PVC pipe has outside diameter 150mm and wall thickness 15mm. Measurements on this pipe give K1c=2.4 MPa.mt/2 and yield stress, Qy=50 MN. m-2. Assure that the larges flaws are 100 um cracks and that the calibration factor for the specimens used to measure fracture toughness is 1.12. The pipe is subjected to a test in which the internal pressure is gradually raise until the pipe fails. Will the pipe fail by yielding or brittle fracture in this burst test? At what pressure will the pipe rupture?
