68 year old lady, jaundiced.  No pain. Stools were pale. Liver function tests (LFTs) were:
Bilirubin
(µmol/L) - 305

AST - 90

ALT - 90

Alkaline
Phosphatase - 900


30 year old professional footballer has reported to his GP with flu like symptoms following a few weeks on holiday. He has pain in the area of the liver.  There is evidence of jaundice. LFTs are:

Bilirubin
(µmol/L) - 100

AST - 450

ALT - 90

Alkaline
Phosphatase - 99

The reason you need your liver functions tested is because many medications can effect the liver just like alcohol. The blood test is not checking for what drugs are in your system, only how your liver is doing. If your concern is wanting to keep your drug use confidential, having this blood test will not identify the drugs in your system.
On another note-if you are a heavy drinker and have been for some time, your liver enzymes may be elevated. If your test comes back abnormal -it is time to come clean with your doctor.

Have the blood work done and see what happens.
A nurse who knows all about alcohol and drug use.
