If a women with  the genotype IAIB, Rh+ and a man with type O Rh- have a child, what is probability that child will have blood type A Rh-?

A mother who is blood type AB could pass either an A or a B allele to her son or daughter.

A father who is blood type O can only pass an O allele to his son or daughter.

This couple could have children of either blood type A (O from father and A from mother) or blood type B (O from father and B from mother).

The child, therefore, will have equal chances of being either A or B blood type.

The question is asking two things.

1. What's the probability of the child having a RH-
2. What's the probability of the child having A blood type

The Answer is 1/4 = 0.25

This is a question that a punnet square is optimal.

1. RH- = dd
   RH+ = Dd or DD (because they do not specify if it is homozygous Dominant you take the Dd)

d Dd    dd    = 1/2 RH- 1/2 RH+
d Dd    dd

2.  ii = O
IAIB = AB

   IA     IB
ii IAii   IBii     = 1/2 A    1/2 B
ii IAii   IBii

1/2 (RH-) x 1/2 (A) = .25
