Increased distance leads to more isolation and less access to reproductive opportunities between populations decreasing genetic exchange.

b.   Let us imagine that we observe that Fst increases more rapidly with distance for mitochondrial DNA than for autosomal DNA for some species. Explain how this can happen. (Note mitochondrial DNA is only inherited from the mother) (Hint: there are at least two explanations). (4 marks)
Genetic exchange can only be transmitted by the female so would increase more rapidly as less exchange would occur.

c. How might you differentiate your answers to part b (Note evolution is too slow to do an experiment) (2 marks)
