The radio lobes observed on either side of many active galaxies are caused by

(a)   material ejected from the nuclei of the galaxies hitting intergalactic gas, exciting radio emission.
(b)   radio energy originating in the central black hole reflected by dense and radio-reflecting gas clouds suspended by magnetic fields above galactic poles.
(c)   the extended galactic radio source being split by a dark disk of matter edge-on to our viewing direction.
