The only difference between double radio sources, quasars, and BL Lacertae objects, in terms of appearance, may be

(a)   the angle between the line of sight and the line of the two oppositely directed jets of matter in the source.
(b)   their age, BL Lacertae being the youngest, showing no spectral line emission, quasars intermediate, and double radio sources the oldest, the result of the dying out of the central source of the system.
(c)   their distance from the Earth. Double radio sources are close enough to be resolved, quasars are sufficiently close to show some structure, while BL Lac objects always appear as point sources because of their extreme distance.
