163 -- Formula for calculating target heart rate is to subtract the patient’s age from 20. Patients have to exercise to raise the heart rate to expend moderate or vigorous effort for at least 10 minutes in order to lose weight. Target heart rate is one method to teach the patient in order to measure exercise effort.
