1 -- Urinary retention is confirmed using a bladder scan or by inserting a urinary catheter (if possible) and measuring the urine output. Renal scan, intravenous pyelography (IVP) and MRI will provide information about the structure of the kidney and vascular flow in the renal system, but are not the tests of choice in determining urine retention.
