Why? What if it was to the hydrogen gradient between the matrix and intermembrane space? Why?

I am assuming you are talking about ATP synthase. This is the enzyme that helps to bring H+ ions through the membrane and in return creates an ATP. This would be stopped with just the ATP produced there. Fortunately there are many other places that can create ATP it can still live.

If you are talking about mitochondrial ATP, well then you are dead. This has been shown in looking at the causes of death. One of the causes is the calcification of the mitochondria. This will inhibit all ATP created by oxidative phosphorylation as well as the citric acid cycle.

ATP synthesis would be greatly reduced.  You could still get some from glycolysis, but you'd be dead so not really.  ATPsynthase (the enzyme that makes ATP) relies on a hydrogen ion gradient created when those ions are moved across the membrane via the electron transport chain.  Then because there are more ions outside, they naturally want to move inside.  As they move back through ATPsynthase, they provide that enzyme with the energy to make ATP from ADP.

ATP synthesis and hydrogen ion flow are  tightly coupled process. If Hydrogen ion do not flow no ATP can be made.  That is obvious from all we have studied so far.  But the opposite is also true if no ATP can be made then hydrogen ions cannot flow because of the tight coupling.  This is not so obvious.  If substrate is present, like succinate, but no ADP or Pi is present, the ATPase cannot make ATP.
