this is an ongoing discussion right now where i am and we need more opinions!

is it just 50-50 male female, or if both parents have loads of brothers is the 'male gene' possibly hereditary?

no.  is 50/50, and it is only the fathers genetics that will lead to a son.  it is just chance that a family may have many sons

No, the sex of the baby is decided by the sperm that finds its way into the egg. It really is 50/50 odds. It does not matter the position the baby was conceived in or the type of moon that is in the sky, these are just old wives tales!
