I missed class and I have to copy my friend's notes.

It says:
Release CCK, secretion (hormones)-> synthesis of bile by liver, contraction of gall bladder, synthesis of enzymes and HCO3 by pancreas, release of secretions into duodenum.

Then it has two arrows pointing at "Release CCK" that says "chyme in duodenum and cholecystokinin".

What does all of this mean? The unit is digestion.

the CCK is the peptide hormone (cholecystokinin) which is responsible for STIMULATING digestion of fat and protein.
it is synthesised by I-cells in the mucosal epithelium of the small intestine and secreted in the duodenum, the first segment of the small intestine, and causes the release of digestive enzymes and bile from the pancreas and gallbladder, respectively. It also acts as a hunger suppressant.

CCK is cholecystokinin.

When we eat, the food passes from the esophagus, to the
stomach, and then to the first part of the intestine, known
as the duodenum.  By the time the food reaches the duodenum,
it is known as chyme.

The liver makes bile. This bile flows from the liver,
through tube like structures (known as ducts) to the
gallbladder to be stored and concentrated.
When the chyme (food) is in the duodenum, the
hormone known as CCK (cholecystokinin) is released
and it signals the gallbladder to contract.  This pushes
the bile into the common bile duct and it flows down
to the intestines to emulsify the fats we eat so they
can be digested.

The pancreas makes Sodium Bicarbonate.
The pancreatic duct connects to the common bile
duct.  The pancreas releases the sodium bicarb to
go the the intestines to help keep the acid level down
(ph balance)...it is an alkaline to stop the acid from
harming the intestines.  The pancreas also make
enzymes (amylase and lipase) to help in the
digestion process.

Hope this has been of some help to you.
