How do I determine how many oxygen atoms there are in a -ate ion? Sulfate is SO4 and Chlorate is ClO3. Why do they both have the same ending but have different number of oxygen atoms? How would I know nitrate has 3 Oxygen atoms without memorizing it. Is there a reason behind the number of O atoms in each polyatomic ion?
