This is simply another way of saying "activities that promote comprehension which are used before a student has read a selection".
 
Comprehension instruction should begin before students read a narrative.
 
Two good introductory procedures are (a) previewing and (b) predicting.
 
Two good introductory procedures are (a) having students engage in grand conversations after the text has been read and (b) using character maps.
