It means that you can "save" rare plant species, or novel plants as you don't need to hunt down a sexual partner.

The major drawback is that you end up with genetically identical monocultures. This means that all of the subsequent plants are equally susceptible to drought, freezing stress and disease. So a single abnormally cold winter, or a single infection can lead to the loss of an entire population of plants. This could be reduced by spatially separating the plants, but that can only go so far.

Additionally once you've established a population by micropropagation you're giong to have further issues with fitness if you then try and sexually breed the plants. There's no new influx of genes/alleles and so it is incredibly hard to try and breed the population for resistances.
